Kids and sports. Although now grown, my boys have had their share of bumps and bruises. We’ve had our trips to the ER and a concussion along the way. Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion will alert parents on the steps to take to keep their children safe during the upcoming sports season.
Josh Hubert, PT, DPT, MS, ATC, Physical Therapist, Athletic Trainer and Facility Director for the Wexford location of Physical Rehabilitation Services www.prsrehab.com will present a talk on Concussions and Sports Injuries at the Health and Safety Fair at the Shoppes at Northway on Saturday, June 12th at 11:00 am. Prior his current position at Physical Rehabilitation Services, he served as an Athletic Trainer at Gallia Academy and Mars High School and an Assistant Athletic Trainer and faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh.
Parents can learn how concussions affect brain function, signs and symptoms of a concussion, and what to do if a concussion is suspected. Computer generated ImPACT tests measure attention, memory, processing speed and reaction cognitive testing for baseline pre-injury and post injury results. Although your child may push you to return to the playing field, athletes need at least ten days to recover from a concussion injury.
Prevention of concussions can occur with proper fitting equipment, mouth guards and awareness of coaching staff for possible injury. Be informed and prepared for a healthy sports season.
