My extra 20 pounds (or so), lack of exercise, motivation, improper eating habits have been a source of frustration. When Mike Hall from General Rental Center and Jason Madden from Costco began the challenge to help each other lose weight and change their lifestyles, the whole concept seemed to take on a life of its own. Other members of THE CHAMBER joined in to improve their health as well.
Each team has chosen a charity to raise money for while losing weight. With Team Hall it’s the Miracle League and Parents in Toto, Team Madden supports the Children’s Miracle Network. Members of THE Chamber, as well as the community at large can donate monies to support their team. All monies raised will support these charities. The winning team will take 60% of the pot, and the losing team will receive 40% to give the their chosen charities.
So…I signed up to be placed on a team and fittingly enough was put on Mike Hall’s team. The ironic thing is that clients that I work with – Home Evolutions and COSTA Law Offices are involved with the special needs and autism groups in providing legal, environmental and financial services to this group.
Dig deep and help others while helping yourself. Support the teams in their quest for the title of “The Biggest Loser“! Bob and Jillian would be proud!

I was writing some biographies for staff of a company to use on their website. The individuals were struggling with what to say about themselves. It’s amazing when we need to tell our own story, how difficult that is. We neglect to talk about the community activities we’re involved with, non-profit boards that we serve on and accomplishments achieved throughout our careers.
All of these dots connect to establish who you are and what causes are important to you. Think about all these things you’re involved with and make a list – from church activities, sporting teams that are coached, to leadership roles in the business communities. When receiving awards, write a press release and submit it to community magazines, local papers and if you’re involved with a chamber of commerce or other professional organization, send it there too.
Everyone wants to do business with those they trust. Make sure others know your story.

I attended a recent chamber meeting for “Women in Business” a new initiative being developed by THE CHAMBER. We were brainstorming on the types of programs women are looking for.
Typical things such as balancing career, family, home responsibilities were discussed. We all have stress and women deal with that differently than men. We talked about the glass ceiling and a variety of other issues women face.
But, what came to light is many women are looking for a mentor – be it male or female, someone who can offer professional advise and guide personal growth. As I look back at my mentors, they were always honest and by my listening to them, I had the opportunity to grow. I watched, learned and then did or made changes in myself.
We all have that mentor ability in us to touch someone with encouragement. Perhaps we need to reach out a hand and help others along the way.
